My mom is a Chef!

by: on

“My mom is a Chef!” My 7 year-old son, Luke, proudly announced that to all the kids & mommies at his cluster of desks yesterday (while they were threading cheerios onto pipe cleaners) at their Valentine’s Party. I really don’t personally know those mommies. The one nearest to me asked, ” He means like you’re the one who cooks at home?” “No.” I explained, “I *AM* a chef. I’m a personal chef.” And then came the crinkled eyebrows & curious stares. I could see the questions rumbling through their minds. “You cook for another family?” At this point, one year into my business, ( yesterday was the 1st “birthday” of my company) I can predict the questions. So I explained the many roles of a personal chef.

Today I explained the differences between a caterer & a personal chef via email to 2 prospective clients who were asking if I could send over my catering menu. Unlike a caterer with a set menu, I create a customized menu for each client. While it certainly takes time for me to continually develop new menus, that’s part of why hiring a personal chef is unique and PERSONAL!  Give me a budget, set the tone for the event & inform me of any dietary restrictions or ingredient preferences and my menu planning creativity kicks in.

If you’re considering having an event “catered,” you might want to give thought to having a personal chef come in instead. It might take a little more going back-and-forth to create the perfect menu & fine-tune all the details than just circling some choices off a standard catering menu, but the results are well worth the added time investment.
